The Ministry of State Administration and Local Government of the Government of the Republic of Serbia has invited members of national minorities, who meet the general conditions for acquiring the right to vote in Serbia, to enroll in the Special Voters’ List and thus have the right to elect and be elected in the elections for national councils of national minorities. The announcement states that the elections will be announced in mid- October 2018 Calendar Editable, and the National Minority Councils Act and its recently adopted amendments precisely define the entire procedure, which is assessed as transparent and democratic by all those concerned in this process. National Councils are the bodies that most effectively implement the Constitution with guaranteed minority rights to self-government in education, culture, information, use of language and script.

To register in the voter list, a personal request from citizens is necessary, which practically means that without the personal involvement of members of national minorities throughout the process, these rights will not be fully realized. The voter shall be entered on a special form which, in writing, shall be submitted to the municipal, or city administration, according to the place of residence. The application shall be filed with the place of residence or place of residence for internally displaced persons. The number of entries in special voter lists depends on whether certain national councils will be elected in direct or electronic elections, the statement said.

The Ministry of State Administration and Local Government invited members of national minorities to be notified in a timely manner of the enrollment procedure on a special voter list in order to exercise the right to participate in the national council elections to be announced in August. Assistant Minister of State Administration and Local Self-Government Ivana Antic says that the Ministry has begun work on the preparation of bylaws for the Law on National Councils of National Minorities, whose amendments were adopted in the National Assembly, as soon as it started to be fully implemented.
The Law on National Councils of National Minorities has been improved in the part relating to the transparency of the work of national councils, the reduction of excessive politicization, spending of budget funds, as well as in the part relating to the procedure for updating the data that is kept in the special electoral list of the national minority October 2018 Calendar Editable. National councils are bodies through which national minorities realize the Constitution guaranteed self-government in the established areas of social life – education, culture, information, use of language and script, and it is therefore important that citizens get acquainted and be informed on time about all the activities during this election process.
